Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Monmouth's late inning rally came up just short in an 11-9 Game 1 loss to Eureka Wednesday, just hours before Game 2 was called with the score tied 4-4 due to darkness.
Â
The Red Devils jumped on the Scots for 10 runs in the first three innings, but Monmouth fought back and closed the gap with seven runs in the next two innings. Trailing 10-2 after
Matt Temaner and
Bryson Sheppard drove in single runs in the third, Monmouth took advantage of doubles from
Tyler Ulfig and
Jake Starkey en route to a three-run fourth. In between Ulfig driving in
Grant Myers and Starkey plating Ulifg,
Cameron Kellar took advantage of a base on balls to eventually score on a wild pitch. A
Mike Dato two-run homer highlighted Monmouth's four-run fifth as they made good use of a pair of Eureka errors to close the margin to 10-9 before the Devils added an insurance run in the sixth.
Â
The Scots fell behind 4-1 in Game 2, but again rallied, scoring two runs in the fourth on another Dato two-run homer. Monmouth drew even in the seventh when
Max Garey drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Sheppard double.
Ryan Schulz set the Devils down in the seventh as darkness halted the contest.
Â
Monmouth opens their home season this Saturday with a 1 p.m. twinbill against Simpson.
