Carley Turnbull joined the 30-point club to lead Monmouth to a 79-58 win over host Anderson University at the Anderson Tournament Sunday afternoon.
Â
Turnbull poured in a game-high 30 points as the Scots opened the season with back-to-back wins for the first time since 2013. Trailing 34-33 entering the third quarter, the Scots gained the lead for good on a Turnbull 3-pointer with 4:02 left in the period. Â
Shayne Smith and
Becca Gallis – each named to the all-tournament team – scored Monmouth's first 16 points of the fourth quarter as the Scots opened the final 10 minutes with a 16-0 run to take a 71-52 lead. The Scots maintained a margin of nearly 20 points for the remainder of the game and finished on Turnbull's layup in the final seconds.
Â
Gallis pumped in 22 points on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range in the tournament finale and averaged 25 points over Monmouth's two games after Saturday's 92-72 win over Aurora. Smith chipped in with a 16-point effort to average 20.5 points for the weekend, the same as Turnbull. Turnbull narrowly missed a double-double in Sunday's contest, pulling down nine rebounds, while
Allie Meyers ripped down 10 boards, her second game of double-digit rebounds.
Â
Monmouth opens their home season Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. contest against Eureka.
