Austin Hardy turned in a pitching performance for the ages to help the Scots earn a series split with Cornell in a that didn't end until after midnight.
The "third" game of the night saw Hardy twirl a two-hitter as Monmouth posted a 3-0 win over the Rams as Monmouth won the first and last games of the series. Hardy retired the first 14 batters he faced before the Rams threatened in the fifth with the aide of two errors and a base hit. With the bases loaded and two-out, Hadry induced a pop up on the infield to preserve a 3-0 lead. He went on to face just one over the minimum for the final four innings to earn the complete game win in whihc he fanned eight and walked none. The Scot staked Hardy to a 3-0 lead in the first when a two-out error opened the door.
Grant Myers took advantage, delivering a two-run double and then scored on a throwing error.
Hardy's gem came at the end of a long night of baseball when the Scots and Rams resumed a game suspended in the seventh from last month. Cornell touched the Scots for three eighth inning runs and added another in the ninth to hold off the Scots who rallied with a pair of runs in the ninth.Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth, the Scots threatened when
Dayton Ince led off with a single. One out later, Myers ripped his first of three doubles on the night to drive in Ince. Myers eventually scored when pinch hitter
Mike Dato delivered a two-out single to pull the Scots within one before the rally ended.
Cornell took the first game of their home doubleheader, scoring three runs in the first inning and keeping Monmouth off the board until Myers scored the first of his three runs in the game. The Rams added single runs in the fourth and fifth to offset Myer's trifecta of scoring after he added a double in the seventh and a triple in the ninth.
The split sets up crucial weekend series for both the Scots and the Rams. Monmouth meets Knox in a Saturday-Sunday away-home twinbill while Cornell faced Grinnell in a four-game set. Just three games separate the four teams in the race for the two Midwest Conference South Division playoff berths.
