Box Score 2 Ryan Sparks moved within a whisker of two career records as the Scots came back to earn a split with Coe, dropping the opener 10-1 before rallying for a 7-5 win in the ngihtcap.
The Kohawks jumped on the Scots for five, second inning runs in the opener for all the runs they would need. Coe parlayed four hits and two walks in the inning to break the game open early and tacked on three more in the sixth. The Scots banged out eight hits and had runners on in every inning but could not find the key hit until back-to-back doubles by
Jake Starkey and
Nic Stevens in the fourth plated Monmouth's lone run in the game.
After picking up a pair of hits in the opener, Sparks added two more hits - both doubles - in the nightcap to key the win and move to the brink of both the career hits and doubles records. Sitting at 170 hits, Sparks is just two behind the career mark of Hall of Famer Casey Boydstun and his 40 doubles leaves him one behind Ryan Priola's careeer mark. Trailing 5-4 in the fourth, Sparks - who scored three times - stroked a bases loaded, two-out double to drive in three runs and give the Scots a 6-5 lead. He then came home to roost on
Dayton Ince's infield single. The crucial inning gave
Brendan Elens his first win of the season while Starkey worked the final two innings to earn the save.
The Scots travel to Maustin, Wis., this weekend for the Midwest Crossover Classic facing the MWC's North Division teams.
