Box Score DeAndre Wright and
Trent Rains combined for more than 250 rushing yards as Monmouth rolled up nearly 600 yards of total offense (358 on the ground) and scored on all but one first half possession en route to a 44-3 win at Hope College in the season opener Saturday afternoon.
Wright scampered for 139 yards and three touchdowns, averaging nearly 10 yards per carry. Rains ran for 113 yards and one score while
Tanner Matlick connected on 17 of 21 passes for 168 yards – and one TD.
Following a
Joey Biel 26-yard field goal on their first possession, the Scots completed an 80-yard drive with Wright's first end zone run of the day for a quick 10-0 first quarter lead. The Scots piled on in the second quarter when Rains raced in from 21 yards out and Wright tallied another TD on a 48-yard run. Matlick completed the first half scoring, hitting
Brock Thoms with an 11-yard pass with less than a minute left in the half.
While the Scots offense was rolling, the defense was rocking, holding the Flying Dutchmen to just 156 yards of offense.
Matt Barnes led the way with 16 tackles while
Logan Gigl recorded a team-best two sacks and three tackles for loss.
The Scots open their home campaign next Saturday with a 1 p.m. kickoff against Wartburg.
