Box Score Tanner Matlick threw for 394 yards and four touchdowns as Monmouth posted a 29-22 win over Wartburg in the Scots' season –opener at Zorn Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Fighting Scots rallied after falling being 15-0 in the first quarter, answering with 15 points in the second 15 minutes. Matlick hit
Yansay Williams with a 38-yard scoring strike early in the second frame for Monmouth's first score to cap a two-play, 47-year drive.
Monmouth's defense held the Knights to a three-and-out on their next series to give the scots the ball at their own 17-yard line. The Scots scored quickly on their possession when Matlick hit
Ben Moore for an 83-yard catch-and-run.
Alec Dutko raced in with the two-point conversion as the Scots knotted the score at 15-15.
Dutko then put Monmouth in the lead with a 19-yard catch from Matlick late in the third quarter.
Trent Rains completed the Scots' scoring taking a Matlick pass 18 yards for Monmouth's final TD.
Matt Barnes led the Scots' defense with 19 tackles, one shy of the program record, while
Kyle Schultz added 10 stops.
It was the first win over Wartburg in Scots' history.
Monmouth opens their conference season next Saturday when they entertain Ripon for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Zorn.
