Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Monmouth got stellar performances from a pair of freshmen starters on the mound and banged out 20 hits in a twinbill sweep of Westminster (Pa.) to win their fourth straight on their Florida swing, downing the Titans 6-3, 10-2.
Â
Freshman
Connor McDonald scattered five hits in the opener and got help from a four-run third inning to log his first career win. Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the third,
Victor Jacobsen reached after getting hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After
Brandon Harroun sacrificed Jacobsen to second, an error on a
Jake Starkey ball allowed Jacobsen to score.
Austin Hardy then made good on the extra out, driving in Starkey and
Ryan Sparks with a double and taking third on the throw. Hardy then came home to roost on an ensuing wild pitch to give the Scots a 5-1 lead.
Â
After Westminster closed to within two at 5-3 with solo runs in the fourth and fifth,
Grant Myers added an insurance run with solo homer to lead off the sixth. McDonald then pitched around a leadoff error, inducing a double play and a pop up to close out the win in the early game.
Â
The Scots scored in every inning but one in the late game, earning
Ridge Greenman his inaugural win. The freshman fanned seven and gave up just one hit over five innings of work before handing the ball to the bullpen where
Josh Weber and
Brian Hoel each worked a single inning.
Â
Following a single run in the first inning, the Scots plated three unearned runs in the second on two singles and a walk. Leading 5-0 heading into the top of the fourth, Sparks ripped his first homer of the spring – a two-run shot – to blow the game open. Monmouth added two more in the seventh after the Titans took advantage of an error to plate a pair of unearned runs in the sixth.
Â
Monmouth will close out their Florida trip with a Thursday doubleheader against Bethany College.
