SCOTS OPEN HOME SEASON WITH OVERTIME

Box Score Late scores were the name of the game in Monmouth's home opener with Central Saturday at April Zorn Memorial Stadium. The Fighting Scots and the Dutch traded points in the final minutes, but Central got the last points in a 23-17 defeat of Monmouth in overtime.

Monmouth got on the boards with a 39-yard Danny Muzzalupo field goal as the first half expired with Central leading 7-3. The Scots then took the second half opening kick and marched 68 yards, capped by Tanner Matlick's quarterback keeper to put the Scots on top 10-7.

The defenses took it from there, holding both offensive units in check until the final minutes.

With just under five minutes left in the game, Monmouth's Logan Gigl pinned Central deep in their own end, landing a punt at the Dutch one-yard line. Central wide out Zack Martinelli hauled in a pass from quarterback Riley Gray on the next play and outran the Scots' defense to give the Dutch a 14-10 lead.

Monmouth answered, covering 85 yards in 13 plays as the Scots used a combination of run and pass to find the endzone on a Tanner Matlick-to-Easton Schaber 18-yard catch-and-run. The ensuing PAT gave Monmouth a 17-14 lead with 1:15 remaining.

Central went to the air in the waning seconds, setting up a 42-yard field goal by Aaron Marcellus. His first field goal of the game knotted the score as time expired.

The Dutch then won the coin toss to open the overtime period and snuffed out Monmouth's first possession. Central made good on their possession, taking it to the endzone for the win.
