Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Needing at least a split at Cornell Sunday to earn a Midwest Conference Tournament berth, the Scots got three hits each from
Alex Kemmer and
Jesse Brucker as the top four in the order combined for 10 of the Scots' 12 hits in the opener, but couldn't shake off a tough two middle innings and had to look at the nightcap for a chance to punch their ticket.
Nursing a 2-1 lead in Game 1, the Rams scored three times in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth to pull away for the 10-3 win despite more than three innings of relief from
Alex Temple who scattered just three hits down the stretch. The Cornell win, combined with a Grinnell sweep of Illinois College earlier in the day to clinch the South Division title for the Pioneers meant the winner of Game 2 between the Scots and the Rams would earn the final playoff berth as the Fighting Scots made a bid to send retiring coach
Roger Sander to the Midwest Conference Tournament for the 15
th time in his 22-year career.
The Scots rallied in Game 2 thanks to
Chase Bair's two-run base hit and an RBI from
Blake Abbott after getting hit by a pitch. The runs cut the Rams' led to 7-3 with three innings to play, but Cornell added three insurance runs in the seventh to ice the game.
Sander ended his career with a school-record 370 wins. He surpassed his predecessor Terry Glasgow for the record last season. Sander earned MWC South Division titles 11 times and in 2002 captured the conference title and advanced the Scots to the title game of the NCAA Monmouth Regional.
