Box Score 2 Monmouth moved closer to giving retiring coach
Roger Sander one last Midwest Conference Tournament appearance with a 6-3, 5-0 sweep of Cornell Saturday at Glasgow Field.
Â
The Scots banged out 14 hits and got 6.1 strong innings from starter
Ryan Sparks in the Game 1 win. Sparks scattered eight hits before turning it over to reliever
Sawyer Shaw in the seventh. The Rams scored two in the inning to knot the game at 3-3 before Shaw could record the final two outs.
Â
Monmouth answered with a three-run seventh, scoring all three runs with two outs to give Shaw the win in relief. After
Chase Bair drew a walk and
Raahsaan Fox stroked a base hit,
Austin Hardy and
Brandon Harroun collected back-to-back hits, driving in one run each. Sparks completed the inning with a run-scoring double to give the Scots the final 6-3 lead.
Â
Hardy then went to the mound in Game 2, tossing a three-hit complete game shutout to move the Scots a game out of the MWC Tournament with two games to play.
Jesse Brucker drove in all but one of the Scots' runs in the nightcap. His first inning single plated Sparks for a quick 1-0 lead. He then added a solo homer in the third and his two-run single in the three-run seventh put the game away.
Â
The two teams will meet tomorrow in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, with a conference tournament berth hanging in the balance for both squads.
