Scots sweep Fire, go for series sweep Sunday

Box Score The Fighting Scots got solid pitching performances and timely hitting in Saturday's 11-6, 9-2 sweep of Knox to improve to 4-2 in Midwest Conference play.

Monmouth took a 5-1 lead in the top of the fifth when their first four batters reached. Winning pitcher Austin Hardy helped himself with an RBI single in the inning. A wild pitch and a balk helped the Scots score the final two runs in the frame. Knox countered with a three-run homer in their half of the inning to tie the game at 5-5 before Hardy slammed the door. Ryan Sparks got two of the runs back in the sixth with a two-run blast for a 7-5 advantage. Teh scots added three unearned runs in the seventh and Hardy ripped a solo shot in the eighth for the added cushion.

Hardy gave way on the mound to Alex Temple in the seventh. The senior gave up just one enearned run the rest of the way to earn the save.

The Scots scored multiple runs in four consecutive innings in the nightcap to give Joe Kerulis the win. Monmouth took advantage of six Prairie Fire errors to plate their first eight runs, all unearned. Chase Bair and Jesse Brucker drove in two runs each to match Hardy and Sparks' RBI totals from Game 1.

The two teams will battle again tomorrow in a scheduled noon start at Monmouth's Glasgow Field.
