Box Score Monmouth's eighth inning rally fell just short in a 5-3 loss to Beloit in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader.
Â
The Buccaneers took advantage of three Scots errors in the first three innings to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Back-to-back errors in the third opened the door for Beloit before catcher
Jesse Brucker gunned down Kam Sallee on a stolen base attempt to end the inning. Beloit added an insurance run in the fifth before Monmouth got on the board in the eighth.
Â
The Scots drew three straight walks and plated their first run on
Alex Kemmer's fielder's choice.
Zach McCrery then raced home on a wild pitch and another fielder's choice from
Blake Abbott scored Kemmer to close the gap to 5-3 and end the inning on a tag out.
Â
Monmouth threatened in the bottom of the ninth with two on but the Bucs induced a game-ended fly out.
Â
Game two was halted in the bottom of the ninth due to darkness. Monmouth trailed 9-3 going into the inning, but plated a pair of runs on RBIs from Brucker and
Austin Hardy. Back-to-back hit batsmen loaded the bases with no outs when the game was halted. No resume date has yet been set.
