Box Score The Scots came close, but turnovers proved costly in Saturday's Midwest Conference title bout at St. Norbert.
Two fumbles and three interceptions snuffed out drives as the Scots fell to the Green Knights 16-7.
Monmouth led the Green Knights in nearly every offensive statistic, producing 368 yards of total offense, 174 on the ground and 194 through the air, but scored just once on three trips inside the red zone.
Led by
Matt Barnes' game-high 15 tackles, the Scots' defense stuffed St. Norbert on their first possession, a theme which held true most of the day as Monmouth's defense allowed only 9 first downs, 137 yards on the ground, and 165 through the air, for a total of 302 yards.
The Green Knights were kept off the board until piecing together a 12-play, 59-yard drive early in the second quarter capped by the first of three St. Norbert field goals.
Trailing 10-0 in the fourth quarter, the Scots mounted an 11-play drive covering 75 yards and capped by a
Trent Rains two-yard touchdown run.
St. Norbert got three points back with their third interception of the game to set up a 24-yard field goal for a 13-7 advantage. A 38-yard field goal with 1:49 to play essentially iced the game for the Green Knights.
While not receiving an automatic NCAA Tournament berth, the Scots will keep an eye on the NCAA Selection show Sunday evening with hopes of earning an at-large bid.
The Fighting Scots wrapped up the regular season with an 8-2 record, winning the Southern Division in Coach
Chad Braun's first season as a head coach.
