Box Score Monmouth unveiled a new statue Saturday on the Boucher Plaza as part of the Homecoming festivities and the men of Fighting Scots football christened it with a 35-7 victory over the Illinois College Blue Boys.
Once again, the backfield by committee strategy panned out well as the Scot wore down the Illinois College defense with 291 yards on the ground, averaging 6.8 yards per carry while scoring on their first four possessions. Freshman back
DeAndre Wright led the Scots' charge with 91 yards on the ground, a touchdown, and an ankle breaking 25 yard carry that set up the Fighting Scots' final touchdown just a few plays later.
Also chipping in on the running duties was sophomore running back
Austin Ray. Ray finished with 88 yards on 13 attempts and two touchdowns that were highlighted by a 41-yard game-sealing sprint to the finish as he broke through the hole flew into the end zone.
Under center,
Tanner Matlick managed the game excellently for the Scots throwing for 125 yards and one touchdown pass to
Brock Thoms from 46 yards out. On the ground, Matlick rushed for 88 yards on nearly seven and a half yards per carry.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Scots rolled.
Freshman
Thomas Lesniewski recorded four sacks, giving him eight on the season through five games, and a forced fumble in the red zone.
Ben Ketchum tossed in a sack of his own to give the Scots ten total tackles for a loss. In each of the two Illinois College red zone opportunities, the Fighting Scots managed to stuff the Blue Boys and keep points off the scoreboard.
After Illinois College's second drive of the game, resulting in a Blue Boy touchdown, the Scots never allowed IC to find the end zone again. Braun's defense held IC to 138 yards below their season average in yardage per game and 24 points below their season scoring average.
With the Homecoming victory the Fighting Scots move to 4-1 on the year, 1-0 in the Midwest Conference South Division.
Next Saturday, the Fighting Scots will play host to the Lake Forest Foresters in a 1 p.m. South Division match up.
