Box Score Monmouth came up just short in a back-and-forth game in Waukesha, Wis., falling to Carroll 32-27.
Tied or traling for much of the first half, the Fighting Scots took their first lead of the game just before halftime when
Michael Buehne hauled in a
Tanner Matlick pass from nine yards out.
Ace Henricks' PAT kick moved the Scots ahad 21-20 with 6:04 left in the first half. Monmouth's defense then held the Pioneers to a pair of three-and-outs, pinning Carroll inside their own 25-yard line on the final possession of the half.
Carroll regained the lead on their first possession after the break. The Pios' Daniel Arden rushed for 31 of his 62 yards to move Carroll into scoring position at the Monmouth one-yard line. Carroll scored on the next play, but their two-point conversion failed, making their lead 26-21.
Monmouth countered on their ensuing possession, driving 75 yards in 11 plays, eating up nearly five minutes of clock before
Trent Rains scored his second TD of the day. Rains' five-yard run gave the Scots a 27-26 advantage after the Scots' two-poitn conversion failed.
Neither team gained much ground the rest of the quarter until
Jeremy Collier's 58-yard punt buried Carroll at their own nine at the start of the fourth quarter. The Pioneers responsed with two gains covering a combined 43 yards to move to midfield. They capped off the possession with a 19-yard TD run by Lamont Williams, but again missed on a two-point conversion to make the score 32-27.
Carroll didn't allow Monmouth past the Pio 47 for the remainder of the game to hang on for the win.
Tanner Matlickthrew for 183 yards and two TDs for the Scots while
Michael Smith - who recorded a game-high four tackles for loss - and
Alex Sheppard led the offense with 11 tackles each.
