Come-from-behind win puts Scots 2-0

Box Score Monmouth staged a furious second half rally to improve to 2-0 on the season for the first time since 2009 with a 28-21 win over Central.

Trailing 21-7 at the half, Monmouth rolled off 21 unanswered points scoring on four of their eight second half possessions. The Scots scored quickly in the third quarter after a Central punt was downed at the Dutch 39 yard line. Tanner Matlick then hooked up with C.J. Shields for a one-play, 39-yard scoring drive that took all of 14 seconds. Matlick – who had run for a 1st half TD – then hit Jake Innis with a two-yard TD pass on the Scots next possession to pull Monmouth to within two at 21-19 with 1:10 left in the third quarter.

The Scots defense then took over, holding Central to a three-and-out, giving Matlick and Co., the ball at the Central 42. Six plays later Michael Buehne roared in from one yard out to give the Scots their first lead of the night just a minute into the final frame. Monmouth tacked on three more points on an Ace Henricks 20-yard field goal for the final points in the 28-21 win.

Buehne finished with 152 yards while Trent Rains added 140. Matt Barnes and A.J. Mesik led Monmouth's defense with 13 and 12 tackles, respectively.
