Scots split with Fire

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth couldn't hang on to an early lead in Game 1, but got solid pitching in Game 2 to earn a split with rival Knox Saturday at Glasgow Field, as the Prairie Fire won the opener 9-4 and the Scots took the nightcap 3-1.

Joe Kerulis picked up the complete game win in Game 2, fanning seven and allowing just four hits. Monmouth took advantage of a pair of Fire errors to plate two runs in the third inning for all the support Kerulis would need. After Brandon Harroun opened the frame with a hit and moved to second on an error, Blake Abbot advanced Harroun to third on a flight out. Ryan Sparks sac fly then scored Harroun to tie the game at 1-1. Ryan Crandall followed with a base hit and promptly stole two bases, coming home on a throwing error.

The Scots jumped on Knox for four runs in the first two innings of the opener, but the Fire countered with a four-run fifth. Eric Smoy supplied the big blow, a two-run double as Knox took a 5-4 lead in the inning and never looked back.

The teams meet again tomorrow for noon twinbill in Galesburg.
