Sander logs record win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Fighting Scots coach Roger Sander became the winningest coach in Monmouth baseball history with a split with Beloit, dropping the opener 4-0, but winning the nightcap 2-0. The victory gave Sander 344 all-time wins as the skipper for the Fighting Scots, surpassing legendary coach Terry Glasgow.

In the first match-up with the Buccaneers, the Scots managed only 2 hits over the first five innings and totaled seven hits in all. A strong pitching performance from Beloit that included 9 strikeouts and only one walk to doom the Scots' offense.

Starter Joe Kerulis only gave up 2 hits and struck out 6 in 3.2 innings pitched but that wasn't enough as Beloit delayed Sander's record breaking day for a few hours.
In the second contest of the afternoon, a stellar pitching performance from freshman Austin Hardy and early offense from the Scots proved to be too much for the Bucs.

Ryan Sparks led off the game getting hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a Zach McCrery single, giving the Scots a 1-0 advantage.

In the third, Monmouth added an insurance run when Sparks crossed the plate again on a fielder's choice from Ryan Crandall.

That was all the Scots would need as Hardy pitched a gem, scattering 5 hits over 8 innings and only walking one batter.

Luke Gschwendtner shut the door pitching a perfect ninth inning for his 3rd save of the season.

The Scots are now 7-6 and host Illinois College on April 4th to open Midwest Conference play.
