Scots rally, but fall to Blueboys

Box Score Three lost fumbles and three interceptions hurt Monmouth in a 31-24 loss to Illinois College in the Midwest Conference divisional opener for both teams.

Monmouth scored the last two TDs of the first half, but found themselves trailing 24-10 at half. Illinois College fired quickly on their first two drives of the game to take a quick 14-0 lead, helped along by the first of three intercpetions on the day.

IC took advantage of a Monmouth miscue on the Scots first possession of the game. Working on a short field, the Blueboys took just 75 seconds to move 33 yards into the end zone for a 14-0 lead in the game's first five minutes. They added another TD and a field goal in the second quarter to take a 14-point lead into intermission.

The Scots came roaring back it in the 3rd quarter, scoring on their first two possessions.

After the Scots capped a 58-yard drive with Trent Rains' TD to open the second half, Alex Sheppard intercepted an IC pass to set up the Scots' next score. Tanner Matlick moved the Scots downfield, hitting Raysean Parker for a four-yard TD toss for the tying score.

Monmouth forced IC to punt on four straight possessions, but the Blueboys began to move the ball midway through the fourth quarter and capped an 80-yard, nine-play drive with a three-yard run to regain the lead for good.

Rains finished with 147 yards and one TD while Matlick passed for 179 yards and two TDs. Matt Barnes and Connor Frakes led the defense with 14 and 12 tackles, respectively.
