Scots and Blueboys split Round 2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth and Illinois College split their Midwest Conference twinbill on Saturday, less than 24 hours after the teams had met in Jacksonville.

The Scots scored three in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 6-5 win in the opener to give Nick Hull the complete game win. Ryan Crandall drove in the tying runs in the ninth and then scored on a throwing error to give the Scots the win. Nick Humphrey and Alex Temple milked walks to lead off the inning, then scored when Crandall hit a triple into the gap. Crandall then raced home with the winning score when the ensuing throw to the plate sailed high.

IC had fought back from a three run deficit in the sixth when they banged out four straight hits to knot the game at 3-3 with two outs. The Blueboys then took the lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth before Monmouth’s heroics.

A five-run IC fifth put the Blueboys ahead 7-4 in Game 2. T.J. Albers’ grand slam provided the punch forth the Blueboys who added an insurance run in the sixth. The extra run became crucial when the Scots closed the gap in the sixth with a pair of runs and then added another in the eighth to cut it to 8-7. Monmouth threatened in the ninth, but Chase Bair’s leadoff hit was thwarted when IC retired the next three batters.
