Baseball drops pair of one-run games to rivals

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth dropped a pair of close ones to rival Knox Saturday, falling 5-4 in Game 1 and then suffering a 4-3 setback in Game 2.

The Scots pounded out three straight hits in the top of the fourth in the opener and scored their first run of the day when Raahsaan Fox was hit by a pitch to drive in Chase Bair to knot the score at 1-1. Ryan Crandall’s single followed, sending Brandon Harroun across with the go-ahead run. Alex Temple and Jordan Gaither followed with RBIs as the Scots’ four-run inning posted starter Nick Hull to a 4-1 lead. Knox scratched out a run in the fifth and then took advantage of three walks in the eighth to take a 5-4 lead and then hang on for the win.

Crandall scored all of the Scots’ runs in the nightcap, but it wasn’t enough as the Fire touched Ray Gerard for three sixth inning runs to pull out the win. Knox put their first four batters on in the inning with base hits as they collected four of their 11 hits in the decisive inning.

The teams will meet at Monmouth's Glasgow Field Sunday for a noon double-header.
