Scots slay Green Knights thanks to 24-point second quarter

Box Score The Monmouth College Fighting Scots caught fire during the second quarter of Saturday afternoon's home opener against the St. Norbert Green Knights en route to a 31-9 conference win. The Scots scored 24 of their 31 points in that second quarter.

After a scoreless opening period the Scots struck quickly in the second quarter with Brik Wedekind tossing a 4-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Youngren, following the extra point by Ace Henricks, the Scots held a 7-0 lead. The Scots struck again with 3:18 left in the second quarter on an 18-yard quarterback keeper by Wedekind. The Scots added a third touchdown in the second quarter following an interception by Jordan Kalk. Trey Yocum rushed in from 15-yards out to give the Scots a 21-0 lead. The Scots would add a field goal by Henricks at the end of the half, following a fumble on the kickoff by the Green Knights.

St. Norbert would get on the board early in the third quarter on a 43-yard pass from James Tringali to Brian Fliess. Monmouth answered right back with a 44-yard rush by Yocum to give the Scots a 31-7 lead with 4:12 remaining in the third quarter. St. Norbert then sacked Wedekind for a safety early in the fourth quarter for the final points of the game.

The Fighting Scots were led by their rushing attack of Trey Yocum and James Lauber. Yocum ran for 149 yards and had two touchdowns, while Lauber ran for 70 yards. Quarterback Brik Wedekind finished the game 10-for-17 passing for 90-yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Ryan Flannigan led the defense with 10 tackles while Jack Porter picked up two sacks.

With the win Monmouth moves to 3-1 on the season and 3-0 in the Midwest Conference.
