Box Score Monmouth’s late rally wasn’t enough as Illinois College clipped the Scots 34-31 for the Blue Boys first win over Monmouth since 1996.
IC scored on their first two possessions before Monmouth got on the boards with back-to-back TDs in the second quarter. The Scots countered IC’s second TD with a 10-play, 70-yard drive when Brik Wedekind hit C.J. Shields with a 21-yard scoring strike.
A Michael Lafferty interception and 60-yard return on the Blue Boys ensuing possession set up the Scots at the IC 25. Trey Yocum then scored from 11 yards out to give him 43 career TDs, tying Mike Blodgett for the MC record. The score also knotted the game at 14-14.
Illinois College inched a score across before halftime to regain a 21-14 lead they never relinquished. Monmouth made it close down the stretch, trialing 27-17 late in the fourth quarter, Wedekind found Shields for his second TD grab, this one covering 48 yards to close the gap to 27-24.
The Blue Boys answered again, with a seven-play, 50-yard drive and score to make it 34-24. Monmouth rallied when Austin Peterson hauled in a 19-ayrd pass with 1:04 left to make it 34-31.
IC then recovered Monmouth’s onside kick and ran out the clock.
Both Wedekind and IC’s Michael Bates passed for 254 yards each.
