Scots rack up 600 yards in blowout of the Vikings

Box Score Monmouth rolled up 600 yards of offense and junior running back Trey Yocum moved to within one touchdown of the Fighting Scots’ all-time record in a 56-28 win at Lawrence.
The Fighting Scots scored on all but two possessions, including their last possession to run out the clock. Monmouth took their opening possession on a 10-play, 80-yard drive, helped along by a Brik Wedekind-to-Kramer Matzen 23-yard pass play and a 23 yard run from Michael Buehne. Yocum capped the drive with his first of four TDs on the day, running in from seven yards out to give Monmouth an early 7-0 lead.
Lawrence answered quickly on their ensuing possession, covering nearly 70 yards in less than three minutes to knot the game at 7-7.
The Scots then countered, scoring the next five TDs as Yocum added scoring runs of 2, 5 and 2 yards, ending the day with 176 yards rushing on 29 carries. Wedekind also had a score-producing day, throwing TD passes to Garrett Youngren and C.J. Shields as the Scots roared to a 35-7 halftime lead.
The Vikings added three second half TDs, but couldn’t close the gap after Monmouth took a 42-7 lead on James Lauber’s TD run to start the third quarter.
Monmouth’s 600 yards of offense is the highest output this year and the eight-highest all-time. It’s the most yards gained by the Scots since Oct. 15 of last year when they put up 591 yards against Lake Forest.
