Scots fall in Homecoming to Foresters despite late score

Box Score Monmouth rallied, but couldn’t hold off Lake Forest, falling to the Foresters 28-24 at the Scots’ Homecoming.
Trailing 21-17 in the fourth quarter, the Scots pieced together a nine-play, 70-yard drive. Brik Wedekind raced 22 yards on a quarterback keeper to give Monmouth their third lead of the game, this time with 5:08 left.
The Foresters then fashioned their own scoring drive. A six play drive that took just 2:43 put Lake Forest ahead to maintain the lead in the Midwest Conference.
Monmouth had opened the scoring with Ace Henricks’ 27-yard field goal in the first quarter and the team traded possessions until an interception set up the Foresters first score. Working off a short field, Lake Forest took the lead with a 24-yard TD pass to start the second quarter.
The Scots rallied and regained the lead on a 12-yard Wedekind to Garrett Youngren TD. Monmouth built the lead to 17-7 in the second half on Wedekind’s first TD run of the day, before the Foresters countered with a pair of TDs to take a 21-17 lead, setting up the fourth quarter drama.
Yocum finished the day with 104 yards on 27 carries and Wedekind completed 19 of 27 passes for 180 yards and two interceptions.
Three turnovers hurt the Scots who outgained the Foresters 392-298.
