After serving for years as a volunteer and then a part-time assistant, Mitch Russell was elevated to full-time status at his alma mater for the 2015 season. Russell serves as the defensive line coach, a line that helped the defensive unit lead the nation in fewest points allowed in 2016 and 2018.
Russell's linemen kept the pressure on in 2017 on the way to back-to-back MWC titles. The Scots held five teams to less than 100 yards rushing, including an impressive minus 14 yards during a three-game stretch where they allowed just 58 total yards rushing. Russell’s guidance was instrumental in 2018 when defensive end Thomas Lesniewski earned the Scots’ first All-American award by a defensive lineman since 2009.Â
A defensive lineman for the Scots himself in the mid ‘90s, Russell won four letters and recorded 205 career tackles. His career tackle total is in the Scots’ top 10 for linemen. He graduated with a degree in Education in 1998.
In the offseason Russell, an avid fisherman, serves as the Spring Sports Event Manager at Monmouth.

Russell and his wife Julie, also a Monmouth graduate, reside in Monmouth with their three children.
