The Monmouth College volleyball team fell 3-0 in both matches against nationally ranked teams on Saturday at the IWU Invite. The Fighting Scots lost 25-21, 25-18, 25-12 to No. 24 Dubuque and 25-14, 25-19. 25-12 to No. 17 Hope.
Against Dubuque in the first match,
Kaylee Celus (Annawan, Illinois) led the way with eight kills while
Chloe Strachan (Reynolds, Illinois) added seven and
Bri Woodard (Monmouth, Illinois) had six.
Tyla Mattson (Morton, Illinois) led the way with seven assists while
Zoe Nizzia (Pekin, Illinois) had six.
Abby Viano (Braidwood, Illinois) led the team with five blocks while
Melina Teunis (Grand Haven, Michigan) and Woodard both had three. Nizzia led the team with 12 digs and
Kami Barth (Washington, Illinois) had 10. Celus had two aces to head the Scots.
In the second match against Hope, Celus led the way with seven kills and one ace.
Katie Whitson (Mackinaw, Illinois) had six assists and Mattson added four. Strachan and Viano both had three blocks while Teunis had two. Nizzia led Monmouth with nine digs and Mattson had seven.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Whitson made her debut against Dubuque and played in both games Saturday…Celus had 15 kills on the day…Monmouth had never played Hope…The Scots are 4-14 all-time against Dubuque with the last matchup coming in 2024…The Scots play in a tournament next weekend at DePauw…They will host DePauw Friday night before taking on Anderson and Illinois Tech on Saturday…The home opener is Tuesday, September 15 against Augustana.
