Peel Scores 12 Points but Scots Fall at Grinnell

Box Score The Monmouth College women's basketball team put three in double digits but lost at Grinnell 71-42 on Wednesday. The Fighting Scots (7-14, 3-9) head to Ripon this weekend before hosting Knox next week.

Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois) made a layup 30 seconds into the game before Grinnell scored eight points in a row. Jamaica Walker (Mobile, Alabama) ended the run with a layup and scored five straight points to end the quarter with the Pioneers up 13-9.

Stearns made a layup early in the second quarter but Grinnell pushed the lead to 25-11. Ava Pelaez (Aurora, Colorado) made a jumper and Hannah Peel (Gladwin, MIchigan) hit a 3-pointer to pull it back to single digits. The hosts pushed the lead to 15 before Peel scored again to end the half. 

Grinnell started the second half with a basket to lead 35-18 before Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois)  scored. Stearns hit a 3-pointer and Brooklyn Sellers (Freeport, Illinois) scored in the paint for a 38-25 game. The Pioneers went on an 11-2 run before Walker hit a 3-pointer. The Pioneer ended the half with two free throws to lead 51-30. 

After Grinnell scored the first five points of the fourth quarter, Stearns made a layup. The Pioneers led 63-32 when Hoy made a free throw and Peel hit a 3-pointer. With under three minutes to play, Grinnell made free throws for a 68-36 advantage before Hoy made a layup and Peel finished the scoring with her third 3-pointer of the game.   

Peel led the Scots with 12 points while Stearns had 11 points and Walker added 10. Sellers led the way with six rebounds and three assists. Walker had three steals and Hoy had Monmouth's only block.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Peel tied her season-high with 12 points and set a career-high with three made 3-pointers…Walker has scored 10 or more points four times this season, three of those in MWC games…Stearns has a team-best 13 games with at least 10 points, including four in a row…Stearns tied Zoie Wall, Katie Houston and Chris Hickey for 20th in career 3-pointers made…Hoy moved into sole possession of ninth on the games played list with 96…Grinnell won the first matchup 82-57 at Glennie Gym on Jan. 13…Monmouth leads the all-time series 58-36 but Grinnell has won six in a row with a 10-5 mark in the last 15 games…The Scots play at No. 15 Ripon on Saturday after the 1 p.m. men's game.
