The Monmouth College men's soccer team finished non-conference play with a 2-2 road draw at Wisconsin Stevens-Point on Saturday. The start of the game was delayed three hours by lightning and thunderstorms before the Fighting Scots (3-2-2) made it four straight games without a loss.
"Once again, the boys showed fight out there tonight after a long delay," said head coach
Ian Hatleli. "We came up big in the air today, which we knew we had to do. We knew it was going to be a game of throw-ins and balls in the air and not a game of soccer but we were ready for that."
Both keepers were tested early as Monmouth's
Luis Villa (El Paso, Texas) made a save 90 seconds into the game and
Isaac Price (Peoria, Illinois) forced a save from UWSP a minute later. Villa made another save in the ninth minute and
Logan Corgan (Geneseo, Illinois) shot wide in the 14th. Amilios Ioannou (Lanarca, Cyprus) missed high in the 28th minute and UWSP missed a shot wide.
In the 40th minute the Scots won a 50-50 ball at midfield and knocked it forward. The ball came off a UWSP defender and fell to
Omar Portillo (El Paso, Texas) 20 yards from goal on the left side. He took a turf bounce and volleyed the ball over the UWSP keeper and into the right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Pointers hit a shot off the crossbar in the final moments of the half and Monmouth took the 1-0 lead into the break.
Owen Murray (Cedar City, Utah) had a great shot early in the second half but missed wide A ticky-tack foul in the far front corner of the box gifted the Pointers a penalty kick in the 54th minute and they converted to tie the game. Villa made a save on a shot off a free kick and another save with just over 30 minutes to play.
The Scots had a great moment of team play in the 66th minute, winning a throw in deep in their own end. Murray kept the ball in on the sidelines with a nice back heel touch and Ioannou played the ball perfectly to the middle of the field to an on-rushing
Paul Oros (El Paso, Texas). Oros got a touch and blasted the ball past the UWSP keeper for a 2-1 lead.
Oros had another shot saved and UWSP tied the game with 12 minutes to play. They won a throw-in by the corner flag and the long throw-in bounced off multiple bodies in front of goal and went in to tie the game.
Neither team had a great chance in the final minutes to get a game winner. Villa made five saves on the night.
"Paul and Omar coming up big off the bench tonight and they really came through for us." said Hatleli. "Overall a good day and it is really exciting that this group has completely bought into what we are doing day to day. They show up every day ready to work and now we prepare for conference play."
