The Monmouth College men's soccer team scored their first goals of the season and picked up their first win as well with a 2-1 victory at Eureka College on Wednesday. Junior
Owen Murray (Cedar City, Utah) scored in both halves to move the Scots to 1-2-1 on the season.
"The guys needed it more than Eureka for 90 minutes tonight and it showed," said head coach
Ian Hatleli. "We responded after giving up a tough goal with a goal of our own. We have to get better at closing out games and not letting the other team's actions change our approach."
Goalkeeper
Luis Villa (El Paso, Texas) made a save in the seventh minute and Eureka made three saves in the next 10 minutes.
Alex Cruz (El Paso, Texas) had two of those shots for Monmouth while
Logan Corgan (Geneseo, Illinois) had the other. Murray gave the Scots a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute as
Parker Davis (Burlington, Iowa) picked up the assist. The Scots had two more shots on goal in the first half but took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Eureka tied the game seven minutes after halftime with their second shot of the half. Villa made a save right after the goal and Murray put Monmouth back on top less than three minutes after the Red Devils equalized. Murray's second of the game was assisted by Amilios Ioannou (Lanarca, Cyprus).
Villa made a save in the 62nd minute and another in the 76th. Neither team put a shot on goal in the final 15 minutes of the game.
"Overall we deserved the win but we still have to play better to get where we expect to be by the start of conference," said Hatleli.
