The Monmouth College men's basketball team saw their four-game win streak come to an end with an 88-77 loss at Dubuque on Tuesday night. The Fighting Scots (4-2) had four players in double digits and will now have more than a week off before starting MWC play.
Max Maring (Port Byron, Illinois) scored Monmouth's first basket to tie the game and
Jason Huber (Carpentersville, Illinois) tied the game again with a layup. With
Zay Brown (Peoria, Illinois) in early foul trouble, Dubuque took an 11-4 lead before
Payton Crims (Alsip, Illinois) scored and Maring made two free throws. Huber hit a 3-pointer but the Spartans pushed the lead to 17-11. Brown came back in and made a layup but then picked up a third foul in the first half. Kam Banks (Springfield, Illinois) scored five points and
Connor Watson (Macomb, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer. Monmouth led 23-21 on free throws by Maring but Dubuque responded with a run to lead 34-26. Maring scored in the paint and Crims hit a 3-pointer with 2:05 to play in the half.
Kyle Taylor (Moline, Illinois) scored four points in the final minutes of the half and Dubuque led 40-37 at the break.
Taylor tied the game with a 3-pointer and again with a layup early in the second half. Brown put the Scots on top 44-42 before the Spartans scored five straight. Down 53-46, Taylor scored on a jumper and two free throws. Brown pulled the Scots within four with a free throw but Dubuque went on a 9-0 run to lead 64-51. Brown ended the run with a jumper and Maring made a layup to get the deficit back to 10.
Brown scored again and Cam Thomas (Arlington, Texas) made two free throws. Thomas scored again but Dubuque used a 7-2 run to lead 79-63. Taylor hit a 3-pointer and Banks scored three points. Huber hit a pair of free throws to get the game back into single digits. THe Spartans led by 11 when Banks scored four straight. Dubuque pushed the lead back to 12 and Brown scored with 37 seconds left. The Spartans scored the final points for an 88-77 win.
Taylor led the Scots with 17 points while Maring had 15, Banks had 13 and Brown scored 11. Huber grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Maring had seven. Huber also led the way with four assists and three steals.
