The Monmouth College women's basketball team battled with Greenville on Friday night but came up short in a 66-51 loss. The Fighting Scots (0-2) are back in action on Saturday at the MWC/SLIAC Shootout with an afternoon game against Westminster in Jacksonville, Illinois.
Ella Goodrich (Minonk, Illinois) scored on Monmouth's first possession and a jumper by
Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois) put the Scots up 4-1. The Panthers tied the game with a 3-pointer and
Brooklyn Sellers (Freeport, Illinois) put Monmouth back on top with a layup. Goodrich made it 8-6 with a layup but Greenville scored the next four points.
Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) split free throws and the Panthers led 14-9 after the first quarter.
Greenville went on a 7-0 run to start the second quarter and ultimately pushed what was a 10-9 lead to 23-9. Goodrich ended the 13-0 run with a bucket at the 6:04 mark before the Panthers scored again. Hoy knocked down a jumper and Greenville answered to lead 29-13. Stearns scored four straight points and Goodrich scored five to cut the Panthers lead to 31-22 at the break.
Monmouth started the second half on a 5-0 run through Stearns and Goodrich. The Panthers responded with an 8-2 run to lead 39-29 before Sellers scored in the paint. Stearns made a pair of free throws for a 39-33 game. After the Panthers scored, Stearns and
Averi Rangel (Moline, Illinois) connected on consecutive 3-pointers and Goodrich scored for a 1-point game.
Leading 42-41 to start the fourth, Greenville hit two straight 3-pointers to lead by seven. Goodrich split free throws before the Panthers pushed the lead to 53-42 with a layup and a 3-pointer. Rangel hit a 3-pointer with 5:44 to play but the Panthers scored again for a 55-45 lead. Rangel hit another 3-point with 2:09 to go for a 59-48 score and the Panthers made a layup with 90 seconds left. Sellers scored Monmouth's final three points as Greenville won 66-51.
Goodrich led the Scots with 17 points and nine rebounds before fouling out. Stearns scored 13 points and Rangel added nine. Rangel and Sellers had two assists each, Goodrich had five steals and Stearns picked up three steals.
