The Monmouth College volleyball team got a dominating performance from sophomore
Kaylee Celus (Annawan, Illinois) to sweep Beloit College on Friday night. Celus fell one kill shy of the school record for a 3-set match, delivering 20 kills as the Fighting Scots (10-13, 4-2) won 25-12, 25-16, 25-11.
Celus had seven kills in the first set while
Shea Scott (Keosauqua, Iowa) added four.
Zoe Nizzia (Pekin, Illinois) had an ace and
Alana Robertson (Mapleton, Illinois) provided 11 assists. Robertson, Celus
Melina Teunis (Grand Haven, Michigan) and
Bri Woodard (Monmouth, Illinois) all had blocks in the set as Monmouth never trailed.
The Scots led wire-to-wire in the second set as well with a pair of ties at 1-1 and 4-4. Celus again had seven kills in the set and
Brynn Hogan (Galena, Missouri) had six.
Leah Allan (Oconto, Wisconsin) had an ace, Robertson had 12 assists and Woodard had a pair of blocks.
Beloit grabbed their only lead of the night to start the third set up 1-0 and 2-1. Monmouth won the next eight points and never looked back. Celus had six kills in the final set while Woodard added four. Hogan served three aces, Robertson added two and Teunis had one as Monmouth aced the Buccaneers six times in the set to win 25-11.
Celus finished with 20 kills, one shy of the record. Robertson had 31 assists, Woodard had three blocks and Hogan had three aces. Celus also led the team with 13 digs.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: With two conference games left, Monmouth is tied for fourth place with Illinois College…IC travels to 3rd place Lawrence in the last match of the season next Saturday…Celus has 17 matches this season with at least 10 kills, including seven in a row…The rally-era record for kills in a 3-set match is 21, set by Ashley Farris on Oct. 17, 2017 against Eureka…Celus went over 300 kills on the season and 700 for her career…Robertson went over 700 assists for her career…Teunis has 99 career blocks…Hogan was also in double digits with 10 kills and Woodard added seven…Monmouth leads the all-time series 28-8 with six straight wins…The Scots have won the last three matches 3-0 and they have won seven in a row at Beloit, dating back to a loss in 2008…The Scots play at second-place Grinnell at 1 p.m. Saturday.
