The Monmouth College men's basketball team rallied for a Midwest Conference road win on Tuesday, knocking off Illinois College 74-72. The Scots (3-13, 2-6) trailed the Blueboys (9-8, 5-4) by as many as nine before snatching their first road win of the season.
The hosts scored the first eight points of the game before
Jordan Metcalf (Aledo, Illinois) knocked down a jumper 4:49 into the game. IC again led by eight before Monmouth scored nine in a row to take their first lead at 13-12. The Blueboys pushed the lead back up to six at 27-21 and led 29-25 at halftime. Only three Scots scored in the first half with
Will Ewald (Lincoln, Illinois) netting 11 points, Metcalf 10 and
Kendall Brasfield (Chicago, Illinois) six.
The Blueboys scored the first five points of the second half to take a 34-25 lead. Metcalf got a bucket and Brian Greenman (Alpha, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer to key a 7-0 run. Monmouth grabbed the lead on a 3-point play by Brasfield and the teams went back-and-forth over the net few possessions.
The Scots went on top 42-41 on a 3-pointer from
Jonathan Oradiegwu (Richmond, Texas) and built the lead to five on free throws by Metcalf and Brasfield. Metcalf made four straight free throws to extend the lead to 53-45 with 8:34 to play.
IC cut the Monmouth lead to two with 4:43 to play but Metcalf made two more free throws and Oradiegwu's jumper pushed the lead back to six. Everytime IC got it down to one possession, the Scots scored and they led by seven with a minute to play. Offsetting Technicals with 55 seconds left saw Metcalf's night end but the Scots got a bucket from
Ganon Greenman (Alpha, Illinois) and four straight free throws by Oradiegwu to go up 72-65 with 20 seconds left. After the hosts scored, Ewald made two free throws and IC hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the 74-72 final.
Metcalf led the way with 25 points and 14 rebounds for another double-double. Ewald finished with 16 points while Brasfield had 15 and Oradiegwu had 13.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Metcalf was 11-for-13 at the free throw line and the Scots were 29-of-35 as a team…Monmouth made 26 free throws in the first half…The Scots were 3-of-7 from beyond the arc in the second half…Oradiegwu scored all 13 of his points after halftime after picking up three fouls in the first half…Monmouth held IC to 6-of-30 shooting from 3-point range…When IC won at Monmouth in December they were 8-of-14 from deep…Coach Skrivseth has 15 career wins against IC, the most he has against any MWC opponent…The Scots play at Cornell on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. start.
