Softball Falls to Cornell Saturday

Leber homers in game one loss

The Monmouth College softball team lost both games of a home double header to Cornell College on Saturday. With the 8-6 and 8-4 losses the Scots are now 4-18 on the season and 3-9 in the Midwest Conference. 
 
After falling behind in the top of the first inning in the opener, the Scots took the lead in the bottom of the frame. Jessica Pauley (Moline, Illinois) was hit by a pitch with two outs and Abby Leber (Tremont, Illinois) launched her first collegiate home run for a 2-1 lead.
 
Monmouth added on in the second. Makaylea Sepich (Mackinaw, Illinois) singled and moved to second on an error as Brittney Enos (Fisher, Illinois) flew out to center. Madelyn Belville (Rushville, Illinois) doubled home Sepich for a 3-1 lead but she was thrown out at third on the play. 
 
Cornell tied the game on a two-run homer in the fourth. They plated four runs in the fifth on two singles, an error and another home run. A third Rams homer in the seventh put the visitors on top 8-3. 
 
The Scots rallied in the seventh. Enos and Belville singled before Megan Corniels (Yorkville, Illinois) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Enos with Belville and Corniels advancing one base. With one out MyKenzie Kloess (Dupo, Illinois) singled home Belville to cut the Cornell lead to 9-5. Pauley made it 8-6 with a sacrifice fly but Cornell got the final out to end the game. 
 
Leber (4-8) took the loss as she allowed seven runs on eight hits over three innings with one strikeout. Jenna Pauley (Moline, Illinois) allowed one run on one hit over three innings with one strikeout.
 
The Scots fell behind 1-0 in the second inning of game one and the Rams added a run against Emilie Cain (Lake Villa, Illinois) in the third. 
 
Sepich led off the third with a single for the Scots and she moved to second on a passed ball. With runners on the corners and two outs, Sepich scored on a wild pitch. 

The Scots trailed 6-1 into the sixth. With one on and two outs, Belville singled to right and stole second. Sepich came home on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 6-2. 
 
Monmouth rallied down 8-2 in the seventh. With one on and two outs, Alex Chamberlain (Canton, Illinois) singled. Jessica Pauley rifled a double into right-center to cut the lead to 8-4 but Cornell finished off the game for the sweep.
 
Cain (0-4) took the loss as she allowed two earned runs on six hits over 4 ? innings. Hailey Rennick (Washington, Illinois) allowed three runs on two hits and a walk in 2 ? innings in her return to action. 

Monmouth Moments: With her double in game two Jessica Pauley is now tied for 13th on the Scots career list with 20 doubles...Her three RBI on the day put her at 44 for her career, ranking in the Scots top 20...Rennick pitched for the first time this season as she returned from injury...The Scots have hit two home runs on the season...Chamberlain picked up her first hit of the season..Four of the six losses to Cornell this season were by two runs or less with three one-run losses...The Scots play a double header at Knox on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.
