The Monmouth College men's tennis team finished the regular season with a hard-fought 5-4 loss at Cornell on Sunday. Sleet forced the matches indoors at the Small Sport Center Arena in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
The loss drops Monmouth to 2-6, 2-4 in Midwest Conference play. They will learn their MWC Southern Division playoff opponent after Monday's Cornell-Grinnell match.
The Scots led 2-1 after doubles.
Joseph Shie (Davenport, Iowa) and
Zach Harris (Mascoutah, Illinois) won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles while
Andrew Shie (Davenport, Iowa) and
Brendan Guenther (Pekin, Illinois) won 8-1 at No. 2.
Matt Simonson (Monmouth, Illinois) and
Adam Greer (Brimfield, Illinois) fell 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Three of the six singles matches went to a decisive third set.
Joseph Shie won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 while Cornell took the No. 5 and No. 6 matches in straight sets.
Andrew Shie fell at No. 2 doubles with a 6-2 loss in the third set after he won the second 5-7 to even the match.
Guenther won 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 4 and the deciding match came at No. 3 singles. Harris won the first set 6-4 but Cornell's Chris Penas-Hull rallied to win 6-4, 6-4 in the second and third sets in a singles match that took three hours.
