Facing the juggernaut that is Grinnell College tennis, the Monmouth College men's and women's teams both fell 9-0 on Saturday in their regular season home finale's. The men's team (2-5, 2-3) will play at Cornell on Sunday and could host a Midwest Conference playoff match next week. The women's team will be on the road for the MWC postseason next week with the site and opponent to be announced.
The men got the day going and two of the three doubles matches went to Grinnell 8-4. At No. 1 doubles
Joseph Shie (Davenport, Iowa) and
Zach Harris (Mascoutah, Illiinois) fell 8-4 while
Andrew Shie (Davenport, Iowa) and
Brendan Guenther (Pekin, Illinois) were the last ones to finish with the No. 2 doubles also going 8-4. At No.3 doubles
Adam Greer (Brimfield, Illinois) and
Matthew Simonson (Monmouth, Illinois) lost 8-0.
In singles
Joseph Shie had a great battle against Grinnell No. 1 Bowen Mince. After dropping the first set 6-4 and falling behind 5-3, Shie ripped off four straight games to win the second set 7-5 and force a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker went back and forth before Mince pulled away for a 10-7 win. The No. 2-4 singles (A. Shie, Harris, Guenther) were all won by the Pioneers 6-1, 6-1. They won at No. 5 6-1, 6-0 and at No. 6 6-0, 6-0 against Simonson and Greer respectively.
The women's match followed and all three doubles matches went to the Pioneers 8-0. At No. 1 singles
Emma Johanns (Burlington, Iowa) fell 6-1, 6-1 and No. 2
Emily Laughlin (Milan, Illinois) lost 6-0, 6-0.
Isabel Hammond (Germantown Hills, Illinois) fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 and
Emily Henson (Geneseo, Illinois) lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.
Julia Mheidze (Springfield, Illinois) lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 and
Isabella Perez (Chicago, Illinois) lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
The men will play at Cornell on Sunday at Noon while the women's regular season is complete.
Joseph Shie, Harris and Johanns are all seniors who were honored with Senior Day events last week during the season-openers.
