Playing for the first time since a last-second win over Blackburn at home on December 19, the Monmouth College men's basketball team lost at Webster (2-9) 80-54 on Friday. The Scots (2-9) will next be in action on Tuesday, January 4 with a Midwest Conference game at Lawrence.
Jonathan Oradiegwu (Richmond, Texas) scored the first six points for Monmouth with two field goals and two free throws in the first two minutes. Monmouth took a 9-8 lead when
Kendall Brasfield (Chicago, Illinois) made a 3-pointer and a 13-12 lead on a
Jordan Metcalf (Aledo, Illinois) bucket.
A 3-pointer from
Declan Flynn (Monmouth, Illinois) gave the Scots a 16-14 lead with 13:11 to go in the first half. The teams traded buckets until Webster broke a 20-20 tie at the 8:13 mark.
Yuvraj Sidhu (Coppell, Texas) made a 3-pointer but Webster pushed the lead to five at 30-25. The hosts led 39-27 when Oradiegwu made a 3-pointer with 55 seconds left to make the halftime score 39-30.
Webster pushed the lead to 16 early in the second half with a 9-2 run. A layup off a turnover put the hosts on top 4-34 with 15:40 to play before
Amyas Njoku (Los Angeles, California) made a 3-pointer for the Scots.
The Gorlocks pushed the lead to 28 with a 10-3 run. After a bucket from Oradiegwu, the Gorlocks went up by 31 with a 5-0 run. The Scots responded with a 6-0 run on baskets from Metcalf and
Joseph Oradiegwu (Richmond, Texas) plus four straight free throws. Monmouth didn't score in the final 2:41 and Webster got a bucket with 32 seconds left for the final score of 80-54.
Brasfield led the Scots in scoring with 12 points while Oradiegwu finished with 11. The guard duo also led the Scots with five rebounds each, one more than Metcalf. Oradiegwu led Monmouth with three assists while Brasfield had two steals and Metcalf had two blocks.
