For the second year in a row, Monmouth's bid for one of the four Midwest Conference Tournament berths came down to the final day, but this time there would be no repeat. The Scots' 71-62 loss at St. Norbert coupled with Cornell's overtime win at Beloit knocked Monmouth out of contention in their bid for a third straight postseason appearance.
Â
Trailing by 16 midway through the first half, the Scots began a rally when
D.J. Swift hit a 3-pointer on his way to a game-high 20 points. A traditional three-point play followed when
Nate Schroeder was fouled in the act of shooting. Schroeder's bucket on the next possession and a
Trevor Davis layup finished Monmouth's 10-0 run in a two-minute span, pulling the Scots within six at 29-23 with 6:04 to play. After St. Norbert inched ahead by a dozen in the final minutes of the first half,
Trey Swearingen drained a three with three seconds left to cut the margin to 40-31.
Â
The Scots kept it close in the final 20 minutes, closing to 52-47 on an
Alec Hayes basket after Swift's jumper on the previous possession made it 50-45 at the 12:46 mark. The Green Knights eventually opened a double digit lead at 69-58 with 2:02 left, but couldn't shake the Scots until the final seconds to knock Monmouth from the list of postseason contenders.

Monmouth, which qualified for the league tournament on the final day a season ago and as MWC champions in 2018, last qualified for three straight league tournaments in 1995.
