Needing to sweep perennial powers Grinnell and Cornell on Saturday to have a chance at qualifying for the league team tournament, the Monmouth men's tennis team came up on the wrong end of the scores.
    Â
Grinnell ended the Scots' postseason chances in the first match of the day, taking an 8-1 decision. Cornell followed suit in the afternoon, posting a 7-2 win over Monmouth.
    Â
The Scots fell behind 3-0 in doubles in both contests as Grinnell surrendered just three total points. Monmouth came a bit closer with the Rams as
Andrew Shie and
Brendan Guenther battled in an 8-5 loss at No. 2.
    Â
Joseph Shie and
Zach Harris picked up the Monmouth wins in singles where Shie was a two-time winner. After battling to a 7-6, 4-6, 0-6 win at No. 1 singles with Grinnell, Shie rolled to a 6-4, 6-3 win against Cornell. Harris had an easy time at No. 3 vs. Cornell, winning 6-0, 6-1. Guenther nearly joined the singles' party, but dropped a 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 match to Cornell at No. 5.
    Â
Monmouth moves to the single and doubles Midwest Conference Tournament set for April 26-28 in Madison, Wis.
