Monmouth pulled within one win of coach
John Goddard's 200 career victory in dramatic fashion Thursday in Clermont, Fla. After dropping the day's opening game 10-5 to Rensselaer Polytech, the Scots clipped Adrian 4-3 in nine innings to give Goddard his 199
th win.
Â
Zelinda Taylor went the distance in the win, keeping Adrian off the boards after the second inning. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Scots got rolling with two outs when No. 9 hitter
Abby Tucker doubled to keep the inning alive.
Kaelan Bradley then followed with a homerun to knot the game at 2-all. Still tied after seven, both teams scored a single run in the eighth, forcing another extra inning. Adrian's would-be go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the ninth was gunned down at the plate by left fielder
Laura Dulee to set up the dramatic bottom of the ninth. The Scots loaded the bases with no outs in their half of the inning and pinch-runner
Angela Schaumburg raced home on
Brittney Enos' game-winning hit.
Â
The Scots fell behind 5-0 after the first two innings of the day's first game. RPI added another three in the fourth for enough to hold off a Monmouth rally. The Scots plated two in the third when
Jessica Pauley drilled a double to left with two outs. Monmouth took advantage of a Rensselaer error in the sixth to score three more, two off a Dulee double, but that would be all of the Scots' scoring in the game.
Â
Monmouth wraps up their Florida swing with games Friday against the University of Northwestern and Roger Williams College needing one more win to give Goddard the milestone.
