Monmouth erupted for 13 hits and staved off a six-run inning in the nightcap to salvage a split at Cornell. After the Rams won the opener 2-0, the Scots earned an 8-7 victory in the late game.
Â
The Scots took Game 2 with a solo run in the seventh when
Alexis Opel picked up her third hit of the game, driving in
Alison Trettin as the Scots banged out four straight hits in the inning.
Hailey Rennick took care of the rest, stranding the Rams' would-be tying run at third to earn her first win of the season, coming from the bullpen to work 4-1/3 innings. Monmouth had taken a 3-0 lead in the third but Cornell responded by batting around in their half of the inning, plating six runs to take the lead. Monmouth got three back in the fourth as
Megan Corniels led off the inning with a homer and was followed across the plate by Opel and
Savannah Ball who also collected three hits in the contest. Cornell inched out to a 7-6 lead heading into the fifth but Corniels knotted the game on a groundout to score
Jessica Pauley who had led off the inning with a double, setting up the seventh inning heroics.
Â
Monmouth managed just two hits in the opener as Cornell scratched out single runs in the second and sixth innings.
Cassidy Abbott took the hard luck loss in the game, working the full seven innings.
Â
The Scots return home to host Knox in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.
