MEN ELIMINATED FROM TOURNAMENT AS CARIUS NETS SINGLE-SEASON RECORD

Monmouth's four-game win streak ended despite Will Carius becoming the Fighting Scots' single-season scoring leader after St. Norbert clipped Monmouth 73-72 in the semifinals of the Midwest Conference Tournament.

Tied at 37-all at the half, the Scots and Green Knights battled through 12 ties and 23 lead changes before St. Norbert took the final lead with 14 seconds left on a pair of Joe Lemon free throws.

Neither team led by more than eight in the contest as St. Norbert inched ahead 62-57 on a layup with 7:36 left for their largest lead in the final nine minutes. Monmouth regained the lead three minutes later when Justin Batterton scored inside as the teams traded the lead four times down the stretch. After Carius gave the Scots a 72-71 lead with 1:34 remaining, the Knights took advantage of a Monmouth turnover in the final minute to score the game-winner on a pair of free throws.

It was the second meeting in a week for the two teams after Monmouth rolled by the Knights last Saturday to punch their ticket to the MWC Tournament. Carius pumped in a game-high 29 points to finish the season with 664 points, eclipsing Lance Castle's record 658 points set during the 1994-95 season. Batterton finished with 16 points while Tyler Houston and D.J. Swift added 10 each.

St. Norbert will meet Lake Forest – a 99-77 winner over Grinnell – in Saturday's championship.
