Monmouth stayed in the thick of the Midwest Conference postseason hunt, posting their program-record seventh shutout in a 3-0 win over Lawrence Sunday afternoon.
The teams played through a scoreless first half before
Alvaro Alvarez broke the ice in the 53rd minute. Seven minutes later,
Nicolas Esparon and
Lucas Sondgeroth made a run and dished to
Kai Jones who finished the play with an insurance goal. Sondgeroth added another assist in the 69th minute when
Lukas Nilsson blasted a shot to the upper 90 of the far post from 30 yards out.Â
The win – Monmouth's six by shutout this season – kept the Scots in a tie for fifth place in a crowded MWC field. With two games remaining for the Scots, just four points separate five teams behind league-leading Knox.
The Scots host Grinnell Saturday in the home finale for a 1:30 p.m. start.
