Monmouth got back on the winning track and moved to 5-0 in Midwest Conference play with a 70-61 win over Grinnell Wednesday night at Glennie Gym.
Â
Shayne Smith scored the Scots' first eight points on her way to a 28-point night, one off her career high of 29 set on Sunday, as Monmouth jumped out to an 8-4 lead.
Carley Turnbull then got in on the act, posting four points in the final 3:30 of the first period as the Scots climbed to a 16-8 led after the first 10 minutes. The teams played nearly even in the middle two quarters as the Pioneers held a 39-36 scoring advantage in the second and third periods, but still trailed 52-47 entering the final frame.
Â
Grinnell continued to threaten in the final 10 minutes, pulling within on at 60-59 with 4:12 left, but the Scots answered with free throws from
Becca Gallis, Turnbull and Smith to push their lead to four at 63-59 with 1:42 to play. Gallis added a 3-pointer, her only three of the night, on Monmouth's next possession to give the Scots a 66-59 edge with a minute to play. The Scots, who never trailed, iced the game making four of five free throws in the final 40 seconds.

The Scots travel to Lawrence Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
