Box Score A weather induced move to a neutral site didn't dampen Senior Day for the Monmouth College women's tennis team as the Scots rolled past rival Knox 8-1 Tuesday at Lake Storey in Galesburg to stay within one game on the loss side of a Midwest Conference Tournament berth.
Â
The Scots swept doubles play when
Natalie Curtis and
Rachel Leifheit blanked the Prairie Fire at No. 2, 8-0 and the No. 1 team of
Emma Johanns and
McKenzie DeVilder ground out a 9-8 win. Monmouth won the No. 3 doubles match by default when Knox could not field a tandem to face
Haley Johnston and
Lexi Tibbs.
Â
Monmouth then closed out the team win, taking five of the six singles matches. All four of Monmouth's seniors posted wins.
Haley Johnston made short work at No. 3 where she dropped just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win. Curtis and Tibbs each moved up a spot in the order with no ill effects as Curtis won at No. 4, 6-2, 6-3 and Tibbs was victorious at No. 5, 6-3, 6-4. The Scots' final senior,
Simone Johnson, was declared the winner by default when Knox failed to field a player at No. 6.
Â
DeVilder, a junior, had the day's closest match, winning at No. 2, 7-5, 7-6. Â Playing at No. 1, sophomore
Emma Johanns fell 6-4, 6-0.
Â
The win keeps the Scots in sixth, two places out of the Midwest Conference team championships with two matches to play. Monmouth wraps up the regular season on Oct. 7 with a road trip to Iowa to face Cornell and Grinnell.
