Monmouth broke even after they stepped into competition against scholarship teams Friday and Saturday at the Lincoln Crosstown Classic splitting their matches each day.
The Scots opened with a convincing 3-0 win over Crowley's Ridge behind a three-way nine kill effort from
Ali Gustafson,
Lauren Sperry and
Ashley Farris. Winning the first set 25-17, the Scots rolled to a 25-13 second set win before finishing off the match with a 25-23 win.
Brooke Decker took charge in Friday's second match, a 3-0 loss to Lincoln College. Decker drilled a team-high seven kills and added three block assists. After dropping the first set 25-17, the Scots pushed the Lions in the second set before falling 27-25. Lincoln then completed the match with a third set win.
The pattern was the same Saturday when the Scots downed Hannibal-LaGrange 3-0 behind a nine-kill effort from Farris, one more than
Abby Tucker's total. Decker and Sperry added the defense with five block assists each.
The last match of the day went Lincoln Christian's way 3-1. The teams traded the first two sets before LCU won the final two by identical 25-21 scores.
Monmouth returns to Glennie Gym to open Midwest Conference play Wednesday with Cornell at 7:30 p.m.
