The matchups were slightly different than Sunday when Monmouth met Grinnell in the regular season finale, but he outcome was the same when the Pioneers blanked the Scots in Friday's semifinals of the Midwest Conference Team Championships.
The Pioneers took a 3-0 lead in doubles where
Saxon Day and
Paulo Pliego turned in the Scots' closest match, losing 8-4.
Dylan Wong and
Landon Walker fell 8-3 at No. 1 and the No. 3 tandem of
Zach Harris and
Joseph Shie fell 8-2.
Grinnell defeat Walker and Shie at Nos. 2 and 3 singles to take the majority of play for a 5-0 win. Wong at No. 1, Pliego, Day and Harris at Nos. 3-6 were all trailing in their matches when the outcome was decided.
Singles play at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wis., begins Saturday morning at 8. Shie, playing at No. 3 singles enters as Monmouth top seed (No. 2). Pliego and Day at Nos. 4 and 5 are ranked third in their flights. Harris has the No. 4 seed in No. 6 singles.
