MEN SPLIT SUNDAY LEAGUE MATCHES

Sunday produced one win and one loss for the Monmouth College men's tennis team as they hosted Midwest Conference teams St. Norbert and Lawrence.

The Fighting Scots got off to a fast start Sunday morning taking two of the three doubles matches with St. Norbert to post a 7-2 team win over the Green Knights. Dylan Wong and Landon Walker clipped their No. 1 doubles opponent 8-5 while Paulo Pliego and Saxon Day rolled to an 8-3 win at No. 2.

Leading 2-1 heading into singles play, Wong and Day quickly disposed of their competition in straight sets at Nos. 2 and 5, respectively. Shie and Harris also posted two set wins, but Shie had to earn a second set 7-5 victory after a 6-4 Set 1 win at No. 3. Harris was pushed in the first set at No. 6, winning 7-6 before rolling to a 6-2 second set win. Walker had the day's most entertaining match. The senior outlasted his opponent at No. 1 singles, winning 7-6, 2-6 and 12-10.

The Scots carried the momentum into the doubles matches with Lawrence, again taking two out of three. Day and Pliego picked up their second doubles win of the day at No. 2, winning 8-5 while Shie and Harris cruised to an 8-3 win at No. 3.

Only Day and Shie were able to earn singles wins. Each dropped just two games in straight set wins – Shie at No. 3 and Day at No. 5. Wong forced three sets at No. 2 before falling. After dropping Set 1, 6-3, Wong rallied to a 6-4 second set win, setting up the third set tiebreaker. Lawrence took the matchup, wining 6-2.

The Scots wrap up their home schedule Wednesday with a 5 p.m. match against Knox.
