Joseph Shie and
Zach Harris made an early impact on the Monmouth men's tennis team, earning the squad's first win this season in Rock Island.
The Fighting Scots dropped the team competition to Augustana 8-1Â and Luther 9-0, but Shie and Harris provided the bright spot. Paired at No. 3 doubles, Shie and Harris eked out a 9-8 win against Augustana Saturday evening. Shie nearly made it a personal 2-0 match, going three sets at No. 5 singles. The freshman dropped the first set 6-2, but rallied back with a 6-4 second set win to force the third set tiebreaker. His Viking counterpart got the better of the final set, defeating Shie 10-6.
Monmouth nearly pulled out a pair of win against Luther where Shie again went three sets. Shie took the opening set 7-5 before falling in Set 2 6-2. The third set tiebreaker went Luther's way 10-8.
Dylan Wong and
Landon Walker had the Scots' best doubles match with Luther. Monmouth's No. 1 tandem fell 8-5.
The Scots travel to North Central next Sunday for a date with the Cardinals and Illinois Tech.
